A wealthy family

Artemisia Annua is also called Summer Wormwood, Sweet or Annual Wormwood or Annual Mugwort and belongs to the composite family (Asteraceae). This is one of the largest plant families in the world, with an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 species. Some other well-known species in this family are:
•  Artemisia absinthium (wormwood)
•  Artemisia vulgaris (wild mugwort)
•  Artemisia dracunculus (dragon)
The annual mugwort is distinguished by its bright green fern-like leaves, bright yellow flower clusters and aromatic scent. The plant can grow up to two metres tall and grows best in sandy, well-drained and slightly chalky soils in sunny conditions. Interestingly enough, it produces Artemisia Annua more aromatic compounds when grown under dry or lean conditions.

Artemisinin has shown impressive potential in scientific research. This discovery marked a milestone in modern science and underscores the value of traditional plants in finding innovative solutions.

A treasure trove of connections

Artemisia Annua is much more than just artemisinin. The plant contains more than 600 bioactive compounds, under which:
•  Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes: these substances contribute to the aromatic properties of the plant
•  Flavonoids: known for their antioxidant properties and support the maintenance of healthy cells**.
•  Phenols and coumarins: substances with natural protective properties for the plant.

The interplay of these connections makes Artemisia Annua into a unique and versatile plant that continues to fascinate scientists and herb enthusiasts alike.

From China to Africa to monastery gardens

This Summer Wormwood has a rich history that goes back to traditional Chinese medicine. Here the plant has been used for more than 2000 years to restore inner balance and compensate for Yin deficiency. It is described in the classic work 'Chinese Manual of Prescriptions for the Treatment of Emergency Situations' (circa 340 AD). In the current pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, the dried herb of Artemisia Annua listed as a beneficial remedy.

In other parts of the world, such as Africa, the plant is used both reactively and preventively. In these countries, Artemisia Annua also used to repel insects and other vermin. This because of the somewhat unpleasant aromatic smell. Because of this aromatic property, the annual mugwort was also grown in monastery gardens. There this herb was also valued because of its bitterness. This herb is also part of the Buhner protocol.

Averting evil and bestowing blessings

The name “Artemisia” may refer to Artemis, the Greek moon goddess of hunting, fertility and protection. In mythology, Artemis is seen as the protector of children and women and as a symbol of abundance and longevity. Like her brother Apollo, she was one of the gods who warded off evil and bestowed blessings. Her gifts were considered to be rich harvests and longevity; she was like the force of nature that tirelessly nourished everything. The plant reflects these qualities through its strength and versatility. Another possible origin is the Greek word “artemes”, which means “healthy”. Or “Arthemisia” queen of Caria, who was depicted on “Cruijdeboeck”; the medicinal herbal book in the 16th century by botanist/physician Dodoneus.

Novel Food, what does this mean to you?

Artemisia Annua is classified as a Novel Food within the European Union. This means that the plant may not be sold for internal use within the EU.
