Origin and traditional use
Reishi has a rich history within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where he was seen as a symbol of health, vitality and longevity. For centuries, Reishi was so valuable that it was only used by emperors and nobles. The lac fungus was also traditionally used in Japan and Korea to support general resistance and life energy.
Today, Reishi remains popular among herbalists and natural health enthusiasts, who appreciate this special mushroom for its harmonizing properties.
Botany Reishi
The Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum) is a striking fungus that grows as a saprophyte on dead or weakened tree trunks and stumps, especially of deciduous trees such as oak, beech and maple.
The shape of the fruiting bodies can vary greatly, but is usually kidney-shaped to fan-shaped, with a glossy surface that resembles lacquered wood – hence the nickname Japanese Lacquer Mushroom. The color varies from deep red to orange, brown and even black, depending on age and growing conditions.
Reishi has a firm, leathery texture and a subtle earthy scent. In nature it mainly occurs in Asia, but it can also be found in Europe and North America, albeit rarely. For the sake of sustainability and quality, Reishi is now mainly grown organically.
