The Latin name is 'Salvia miltiorrhiza' which means Chinese sage in English. The Chinese name is 'Tan Shen or Danshen'. Miltiorrhiza is Latin for 'red ochre root'. Salvia miltiorrhiza originates from China and Japan.
Salvia miltiorrhiza is a hardy, deciduous, perennial herb that grows in grassy places in forests, hills and along river banks at high altitudes. The stems are branched and grow up to 30-60 cm long. Flowers grow in whorls, with light purple to lavender-blue calyxes that are about 2.5 cm long with a dark purple calyx.
