Botany Sarsaparilla
Sarsaparilla (Smilax Medica) is a climbing plant in the family Smilacaceae and occurs naturally in tropical and subtropical areas of Central and South America. The plant can grow up to 50 meters tall and likes to grow in moist, well-drained soil.
Sarsaparilla is a woody, vining plant with thorny stems and heart-shaped leaves. The root is fleshy, brown-red and has branches into thin roots that can be meters long. The roots are the part traditionally used for extracts and tinctures. During the flowering period, small yellow-green flowers appear, followed by red berries that often attract birds.
The scent of the root is warm and spicy, with a sweet, earthy undertone – a characteristic that made it popular in ancient tonics and traditional herbal preparations.
Origin and traditional use
Sarsaparilla has a rich history in traditional herbal medicine. For centuries, the root has been valued by indigenous peoples in Central and South America for its versatile properties. In the 16th century, Sarsaparilla was brought to Europe by Spanish explorers, where it quickly became popular in apothecary recipes and herbal formulas.
In the 19th century, Sarsaparilla was found in many tonics, syrups and bitters, often used as part of natural cleansing treatments. The plant also remains valued in modern herbal medicine, especially among people who want to connect with traditional herbal remedies.
