Botany Spilanthes
Spilanthes (Spilanthes Oleracea) is a fast-growing annual plant in the composite family (Asteraceae), native to tropical South America and subtropical and tropical Africa. It grows to a height of about 30 to 40 cm and is notable for its round, yellow-red flower buds that look like a two-tone button. Yet it is mainly the brown-green leaves that are valued for their special properties.
These heart-shaped leaves give a characteristic tingling on the tongue, which occurs upon contact with the mucous membrane. They are harvested when the concentration of natural substances is highest – preferably before flowering.
Spilanthes likes warmth, lots of sunlight and a well-drained, humus-rich soil. In temperate climates the plant grows best in summer, and under optimal conditions it quickly develops into a lush herb.
Origin and traditional use
Spilanthes has a long history of use in tropical regions, particularly South America and Africa. In the Brazilian Amazon, the plant is known as “jambu” and is traditionally used in dishes such as soup – not only for its taste, but also for the characteristic tingling it leaves on the tongue.
Indigenous peoples used the fresh leaf of Spilanthes as a natural remedy for the care of the mouth and skin, where the stinging sensation was seen as a sign of effectiveness. The herb was also valued in parts of Africa within oral traditions, often used as a local remedy or as a ritual herb at moments of transition.
The plant was usually harvested directly from nature and used fresh – whether as a leaf that was chewed, added to food, or incorporated into simple infusions. This application lives on in the modern interest in Spilanthes as a plant with an authentic character and rich history.
